Learn the History
Originally founded by Robert J. Chrisman, the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate was managed by Paul Gripp for a decade. Paul purchased SBOE in 1967, retired in 1986, and passed down the business to his two children, Parry and Alice. Today, the Estate is known around the globe for its lovely grounds and friendly service.
Attend an Event
Fall Open House | November
If you’re looking to build up your orchid collection, consider attending the SBOE Annual Fall Open House in November. The Estate sells everything from bare root and potted plants to seedlings and bulbs during the event. There are plenty of species to choose from, including Cattleyas, Masdevallias, Cymbidiums, Laelias, Dendrobiums, and more.
Can’t make it to the Open House? No need to worry. SBOE will send the plants right to your door! Simply specify your growing conditions and any preferences you have, and your plants will be shipped within two weeks. You can order ten plants for $85 or fifty for $375.
International Orchid Show | March
SBOE also hosts the International Orchid Show, the largest and oldest-running orchid showcase in the United States. Visitors from all over the world return to Santa Barbara each year to delight in grand displays installed by national and international artisans. Show-goers will find vendors offering thousands of blooming plants, orchid-related art, and growing supplies for sale. You can even enjoy the beautiful orchids at local nurseries, many of which hold open houses and special sales concurrent with the Orchid Show.

SBOE is located on Orchid Drive and is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They’re also open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to check it out when you’re in the area!
